Accessing Darwin

The system known as darwin is a Compaq AlphaServer cluster running the Tru64 Unix operating system. The fully qualified registered name of the darwin system is

In order to log in to darwin, you must use a client that supports the SSH v2 protocol. TELNET access is not allowed. Windows users can download the SecureCRT program from the IAT Services Software Distribution Center.  If you use a Unix workstation, you will need to install/upgrade to SSH v2 if you have not already done so. For OpenSSH users: Please note that the OpenSSH identity keys differ in format from the SSH2 keys employed on darwin. These can be converted with the OpenSSH version of ssh-keygen using the '-e' switch.

The following restrictions are in effect when accessing darwin:

When you log in to darwin.rnet.missouri.edu, your session will be directed to one of the cluster nodes, called darwin0 and darwin1. It does not matter which node you are logged in to ... they use a common set of file systems.

The operating system on darwin is Tru64 Unix, Version 5.1B. The Tru64 Unix manuals are available online here.

You must submit long-running jobs to the PBS batch queuing system.  The PBS scheduler will automatically distribute jobs across the nodes of the cluster, based upon availability of resources and system load.  For information about how to submit jobs to PBS, see Submitting Jobs via PBS on Darwin.

Please be aware that the darwin system is continually "under construction". Configurations, options, and restrictions may change as additional software is installed and usage increases. Further documentation on darwin usage policies and procedures will be developed.
